Health Bull Terrier (Miniature) Health Page
The Bull Terrier (Miniature) is a relativly healthy breed. Like all dogs whether they be purebred or crossbred have hereditory diseases which may be passed on to their offspring, breeders strive to do their best when tackling these diseases, with what we know and what methods of testing is available to us at this present time. Below are the lists of knowm heriditory diseases for this breed and some helpful links for which you can read up on are on our links page. Heriditory Nephritis (HN) Polysytic Kidney Disease (PKD) Heart Disease (Mitral valve dysplasia, Sub Aortic Stenosis) Deafness (Unilateral-one ear, Bi Lateral-both ears) Luxating Patella Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) (Bull Terrier Miniature only)
The Bull Terrier (Miniature) can suffer the same things as the Bull Terrier with the exception of Primary Lens Luxation (PLL as it is commonly known) To try and help with our gene pool, some countries like Australia are allowed by the govening dog body of that country to interbreed. This means that we are allowed to have one parent as a Bull Terrier (miniature) and one parent as a Bull Terrier, the puppies resulting from these matings are what we term "interbreds" these are still registered on the pedigree as Bull Terrier (Miniature) no matter what height they grow. Bear in mind that many miniatures do grow up larger than the recommened 14" no matter if they result from an interbred mating or a miniature to miniature mating. Australia has just been granted an extension to the interbreeding scheme until 2013.
